What Precautions Should I Take When I Use Adipex?

George McCartey • September 19, 2009

If you are obese and want to lose weight, then the doctor can prescribe you Adipex. This drug has the same chemical composition that is there in Amphetamine. For this reason, its main use is that of being a hunger suppressant. It systematically affects the brain and the nervous system. It can also be prescribed for other purposes that haven’t been specified by the FDA.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure or even arteriosclerosis (it means the hardening of arteries), overactive thyroid or even glaucoma, then you should consult the doctor before using the drug. The drug shouldn’t be taken when one is in an agitated or even in an anxious state. If you have ever had any kind of drug or alcohol abuse in the past, then you should avoid consuming this drug.

Those that are presently using MAO inhibitors or have recently had MAO inhibitors in the past 14 days should never take this drug. Taking Adipex along with MAO inhibitors has serious consequences, which can be life-threatening or even fatal. Adipex not be taken along with other diet medications such as fenfluramine (Phen-Fen) or dexfenfluramine (Redux) as this can also cause life-threatening pulmonary hypertension.

Even if you are suffering from epilepsy, seizure or diabetes, you must state your condition to the doctor before its use. In many cases, the doctors won’t recommend the drug to you. In other cases the dosage may be altered to suit your conditions and requirements.

Even those that are below 16 years of age shouldn’t take the drug. Adipex is addictive in nature and shouldn’t be used for long periods of time. Always talk to the doctor about the right method and the dosage for using it. Keep the drug in a safe place.

Never take it with other diet medication. Since it has a number of side effects, you should be careful when using the drug. Keep track of the pills that you have used. In case you suspect that someone else is abusing the drug, and then keeps the pills in a safe place.

Never take alcohol or other sedatives along with Adipex. Never drive or operate heavy machinery after taking the medicine since it can cause drowsiness. It can cause impairment in mental and physical agility.

When the drug is taken for long periods of time, people can also experience withdrawal symptoms if they stop taking the drugs. Never stop the drug completely. Rather, you need to taper the dosage on the advice of your doctor, before you stop taking the drugs completely.
